Toronto Fest to Focus on Athens With 2013 City to City Sidebar

Crisis-ridden Greece will share the spotlight at the 38th Toronto International Film Festival as it programs new work by resourceful filmmakers.

TORONTO – Greece may be on the cusp of collapse, but the country's innovative filmmakers are looking to shrug off the financial crisis.

On Wednesday, the Toronto International Film Festival tapped Athens to be the subject of its City to City sidebar at its upcoming 38th edition.

“Where others saw devastation, they saw inspiration,” Toronto festival programmer Dimitri Eipides said Wednesday of resourceful Athenian filmmakers on news of the 2013 focus on their cinematic output.

“Working with minimal means, often exchanging services on each other’s productions, they churned out films which gained attention around the world,” he added of young directors, many just out of film school and making short films.

Toronto will unveil the City to City lineup in July.

Cities featured in earlier City to City programmes in Toronto include Istanbul, Buenos Aires and Mumbai.

The Toronto International Film Festival is set to run from September 5 to 15, 2013.
