Irvin Kershner 1923-2010 The director of The Empire Strikes Back “was a true gentleman in every sense of the word,” longtime friend and collaborator George Lucas tells The Hollywood Reporter. The filmmaker (Never Say Never Again, Up the Sandbox, Eyes of Laura Mars) passed away Nov. 27 at his home in Los Angeles after a 3 1/2-year battle with lung cancer. He was 87. “When I think of Kersh, I think of his warmth, his thoughtfulness and his talent,” Lucas says. “I considered him a mentor.”


Charlex creative director Colin McGreal wed Samantha Fennell, executive director of corporate sales and marketing at Time Inc., on Nov. 20 in the Stone Mill at the New York Botanical Garden.

Emily Ziff, a Cooper’s Town Prods. partner (with Philip Seymour Hoffman), wed Nicholas Dodson Griffin, a broker at Winslow & Co., on Nov. 13 at a private home in Los Angeles. Sixty-five guests attended the ceremony officiated by Buddhist minister Kevin Griffin, the groom’s uncle. The pair honeymooned in Hawaii.

Plum TV vp production Daniel Honan married Jennifer Ephraim, an advertising account executive at Logo, on Nov. 13 in a nondenominational ceremony at the Caneel Bay resort on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.  


Alcon Entertainment co-president and financier Broderick Johnson and wife Jennifer welcomed their third child, Micah Adam, on Nov. 21 in Los Angeles.


Jennifer Jason Leigh filed for divorce from director Noah Baumbach on Nov. 15 after five years of marriage. The actress is seeking spousal support and primary custody of their 8-month-old son, Rohmer. The pair most recently collaborated on the film Greenberg.


Primary Wave Talent Management announced Nov. 23 that Tom Maffei will head the company’s West Coast operations. The longtime manager has worked with such musical artists as Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott and producer Brian Kennedy.

John Ford joined Ion Media Networks on Nov. 29 as president of the TV network. He was a longtime Discovery employee but was laid off last year.

Ivan Diaz, head of international sales at Filmax International, was promoted to director of the Spanish studio after 13-year veteran Vicente Canales left the post Nov. 23.

MTV Networks Latin America brought Charlie Singer back to the company as senior vp content and creative at its U.S. Hispanic network, MTV Tres.  

Meghann Wu was promoted to vp strategy and business development at MTV Networks Entertainment Group on Nov. 18. She was senior director of the group of brands including Comedy Central
and Spike.


Willie Nelson was arrested Nov. 26 for marijuana possesion in Sierra Blanca, Texas. He was released after posting a $2,500 bond.


Emmy-winning producer Denise Cramsey died Nov. 23 of a brain aneurysm at age 41. She produced ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and TLC’s Trading Spaces.

Actor-producer William “Bill” Self died Nov. 15 after a heart attack in Los Angeles. He was 89. Self developed The Twilight Zone andM*A*S*H.
