Nashville — Brad Paisley leads the field with a half-dozen Academy of Country Music Award nominations, announced Wednesday.

Perhaps the most surprising news was the five noms for former Trick Pony lead singer Heidi Newfield, who released her solo debut, "What Am I Waiting For," in August. Another newcomer, Jamey Johnson, picked up four.

Paisley's noms include entertainer of the year, top male vocalist and single record, song and video of the year for "Waitin' on a Woman."

Newfield's nominations include top female vocalist and as an artist and composer for "Johnny & June," up for song and video of the year.

Kenny Chesney and George Strait scored four noms each; Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban each received three.

Nominees for album of the year will be announced next month.

The 44th annual ACM Awards will be held April 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and air on CBS.
