The film, also starring "New Girl's" Max Greenfield and "Parenthood's" Jason Ritter, was executive produced by Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick, the father of director Jesse Zwick.

The TV star-filled About Alex, which had its world premiere at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, has landed a distribution deal.

Screen Media Films has acquired all North American rights to the title and will release the ensemble drama in theaters and on demand day-and-date on Aug. 8.

STORY: Aubrey Plaza, Max Greenfield Talk Breaking Out of TV Roles for 'About Alex'

The movie features small-screen stars Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Max Greenfield (New Girl) and Jason Ritter (Parenthood) along with Maggie Grace, Nate Parker, Max Minghella and Jane Levy.

The film marks the directorial debut of writer-director Jesse Zwick, whose father is legendary producer Ed Zwick. The elder Zwick served as an executive producer on About Alex with his producing partner Marshall Herskovitz.

The Big Chill-like movie focuses on a group of college friends who reunite for a weekend away after drifting apart following graduation.

"Jesse Zwick's film is one of the strongest debuts we've seen in years," Screen Media director of acquisitions and marketing Seth Needle said in a statement. "We can't wait for audiences to discover the extraordinary chemistry shared by this talented ensemble cast."

Producer Adam Saunders added: "We're thrilled to partner up with [Screen Media Films president] Suzanne [Blech] and her team to bring About Alex to audiences this summer. They've shown great enthusiasm for the project since the first night it played at Tribeca and we're hopeful that with their help, audiences around the country will really have a chance to fall in love with Jesse's timely story."

The deal was negotiated by Blech, Needle and WME Global on behalf of the filmmakers. Red Sea Media is currently selling international rights to the film.

Screen Media's prior theatrical releases include Maggie Gyllenhaal's Sherrybaby, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, Kristen Bell's The Lifeguard and C.O.G., the first film adaptation of David Sedaris' work.
