Tribeca Film Institute awards fellowships

A total of $715,000 was given to 22 filmmakers

NEW YORK -- The Tribeca Film Institute awarded Media Arts Fellowships totaling $715,000 to 22 filmmakers Tuesday, including indie "Mumblecore" pioneer Andrew Bujalski.

The "Funny Ha Ha" director received $35,000 for his untitled "Sisters Project," a narrative feature starring offscreen identical twins, one of whom is in a wheelchair.

The 19 other filmmakers receiving the $35,000 cash award include Oscar nominee Laura Poitras ("My Country, My Country") for her upcoming sophomore docu about terrorism, "Release," and Oscar-winner Jessica Yu ("Breathing Lessons") for her deaf teacher docu "Signs of Life."

Two additional filmmakers were presented with $7500 each at the New York Academy of Art ceremony by TFI CEO Brian Newman and director Alan Berliner.
