The film's stars took to the rainbow carpet at Westwood's Regency Theater.

The sparkling entrance to the Trolls rainbow carpet brightened up a rare cloudy day in Los Angeles at the Regency Theater in Westwood. Fans wearing the trademark Troll wigs in an assortment of colors swarmed to get a glimpse of the film’s all-star cast, which features musical talents Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick as well as James Corden, Zooey Deschanel, and Russell Brand.

Trolls is DreamWork’s third animated film to not be based off of a children’s book, which allowed for directors Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn to bring their original idea to life.

“There’s no backstory, so we could make the Trolls world whatever we wanted it to be. We took all this felt, yarn, textures and rainbows to make a movie that’s really about what makes you happy,” Dohrn told The Hollywood Reporter. Prior to Trolls, the longtime directing duo has worked on the Kung Fu Panda and Shrek franchises. However, this time around they opted to take a musical route with their new project.

The two directors were quick to acknowledge that it was the film’s stars that brought life and new meaning to the characters. “Anna [Kendrick] really helped us discover how quirky and insane Poppy is as a princess,” said Mitchell. “She’s a nontraditional princess, which is important to her and us.” This transition away from the typical male protagonist in animated films follows in the footsteps of other major hits such as Frozen and Zootopia. The message of “girl power” is also evidenced by the fearless, fashion Troll twins played by Swedish pop-duo Icona Pop.

The pop stars not only lent their voices to the characters, but also to the movie’s buzz-worthy soundtrack. Produced by Timberlake, it features work from Timberlake himself and other castmembers singing musical theater-style originals and renditions of classics such as “True Colors” and “September,” which also served as the background music for the rainbow carpet, contributing to the upbeat atmosphere at the premiere.

Trolls is set to premiere Nov. 4.
