Broadchurch director Mike Barker and The Fall producer Julian Stevens will join the team for the second season, tentatively titled The Tunnel 2: Debris. The season, to be written by MI-5 scribe Ben Richards, will see the detective team investigate a mysterious plane crash in the English Channel between France and the U.K.

Based on the Denmark-Sweden co-production hit The Bridge, which was adapted for FX in the U.S. and also titled The Bridge, starring Diane Kruger and Demian Bichir, the format has been a hit worldwide.

“They will embark on a spiral of events whose ramifications across Europe resonate strongly with the news today. Beyond their differences, their nationalities and perhaps even their interests, Elise Wasserman and Karl Roebuck will once again join their police talents and human qualities to fight a formidable opponent,” said Fabrice de la Patelliere, CanalPlus’ director of French fiction and co-productions, about the second season.

“This new season is an opportunity for Ben Richard and his team of British and French writers to discuss Europe and its new challenges, raise contemporary issues through a powerful and rhythmic story,” said Shine France president Thierry Lachkar.

The eight-episode second season will be executive produced by Patelliere for CanalPlus, Anne Mensah for Sky, Nora Melhi for Shine France, and Ben Richards, Manda Levin and Karen Wilson for Kudos Film.

Shooting will begin March 3.
