Turner, Criterion to Launch Movie Streaming Service FilmStruck
It will launch this fall with classics including 'A Hard Day's Night,' 'Seven Samurai' and 'Mad Max.'
Turner and Criterion are creating a new streaming service for film lovers.
FilmStruck will launch this fall from Turner Classic Movies and the Criterion Collection with a mix of contemporary, classic art house, indie, foreign and cult films. The service also will become the exclusive home to the Criterion Collection and will feature a channel curated by the Criterion team.
Among the titles coming to the ad-free FilmStruck, through partnerships with indie studios like Janus Films and major studios including Warner Bros., are Seven Samurai, A Hard Day's Night, Mad Max and Blood Simple.
FilmStruck is launching as Turner and parent company Time Warner have made efforts to bulk up on their streaming capabilities. The broadcaster last year acquired streaming technology provider iStreamPlanet, following the launch of HBO's stand-alone service HBO Now. Warner Bros. also recently acquired video streaming site DramaFever.
"At Turner, we are dedicated to engaging fans wherever they are, and we're investing aggressively in content, new capabilities, and new businesses to achieve that goal," said Turner CEO John Martin. "FilmStruck is a terrific example of our strategy to meet consumer demand for great content access across all screens. It's tailor-made for the die-hard movie enthusiast who craves a deep, intimate experience with independent, foreign, and art house films. And it takes advantage of TCM's powerful curation capabilities, as well as its proven track record in building a long-term relationship with passionate film fans."
Added Criterion Collection president Peter Becker: "Working with TCM's programming team, we'll present a broad, constantly changing cross-section of Criterion titles on FilmStruck, a platform designed from the start to present films with the kind of robust supplemental features that Criterion is known for."
Pricing details and an official launch date have yet to be announced.
