TV agent Camacho out at CAA


Michael Camacho, one of the industry's top reality TV agents, has departed CAA.

The circumstances surrounding his exit Monday are said to involve conflict-of-interest issues related to CAA client Oprah Winfrey. Camacho was on the team led by CAA partner Kevin Huvane that brokered Winfrey's deal with Discovery Communications for their recently announced joint venture OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.

It is understood that behind the scenes, Camacho had been maneuvering himself for a top position in the new venture, something that didn't sit well with Winfrey and CAA.

When OWN was announced last month, Winfrey's Harpo Prods. and Discovery said that Winfrey would serve as chairman. The search for a CEO to oversee day-to-day operations is under way.

CAA reps declined comment, and attempts to reach Camacho were unsuccessful. On Monday, a request to the agency's general switchboard to be transferred to Camacho's office resulted in the response that there was no such name listed in CAA's database.

Camacho was a packaging agent and head of the agency's alternative television department. He has repped such reality TV heavyweights as Mike Fleiss, Paul Buccieri, Bertram Van Munster, R.J. Cutler, Allison Grodner and Mike Nichols.

The news of Camacho's departure set the reality representation community abuzz, with agents speculating which of Camacho's A-list clients would be up for grabs. That would depend on whether Camacho stays in the representation business or pursues a career as a producer or an executive, observers said.

Camacho was named as one of The Hollywood Reporter's Next Generation class of 2003. Asked at the time where he saw himself in 10 years, Camacho said: "Still at CAA. In 15 years, I'm thinking about running for Congress."

Camacho got his start in the CAA training program in 1993. He worked for Michael Ovitz and was television department coordinator before becoming an agent.
