Paying the Bills

Canadian cable giant Rogers Communications will pay the Buffalo Bills CAN$78 million ($77 million) to play eight NFL games in Toronto during the next five years. Rogers said that the cross-border NFL team will play five regular-season and three preseason games at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, starting with an Aug. 14 exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Puppetry In Motion

Cartoon Network has devised a new custom promotional opportunity for movie studios that stars a pair of puppets. The concept features two puppets named Jib and Crash. The pair will interview celebrities on the set of their films and feature exclusive sneak peeks of upcoming movies in interstitials during commercial breaks on Cartoon. The first movie to be featured is Warner Bros.' "Speed Racer," opening May 9. Jib and Crash will introduce a 90-second sneak peek of the film Sunday.

TELEMundo feels a pulse

Telemundo Communications Group said Wednesday that it is launching the Pulse Research Center, a research facility located at Universal CityWalk that will encompass focus group testing and touch-screen survey data collection.

TV Guide trims staff

Several TV Guide magazine staffers, including top editors Ian Birch, Steve Sonsky and Lois Draegin, were let go Wednesday, a day after Gemstar-TV Guide shareholders voted to approve the merger with Macrovision. In an internal memo, the company noted Macrovision's plan "to pursue strategic alternatives" for the magazine, TV Guide Channel and TVG.

Mantegna a 'starter'?

Joe Mantegna is in talks to reprise his role as Lou Manahan in USA Network's upcoming series "The Starter Wife." Mantegna would appear in a limited number of episodes of the 10-episode series from Universal Media Studios, McGibbon/Parriott Prods. and 3 Arts Entertainment. Mantegna received an Emmy nomination last year for the role, which he originated in the miniseries that aired in the summer. The series debuts in October.

Riva in court for Fox

Diana Maria Riva has been cast in Paul Attanasio's Fox pilot "Courtroom K," a darkly comedic courtroom drama that revolves around a judge, a prosecutor and a public defender. Riva will play a court clerk.

Jessica Stroup is joining the CW's "Beverly Hills, 90210" spinoff as Silver, a classmate of Annie (Shenae Grimes) who produces a YouTube-type video series.

model 'Behavior'

Stephanie Lemelin has joined ABC's pilot "Good Behavior," a dramedy about a family of criminals. Lemelin will play the teen daughter, an aspiring model.
