TV on the Radio's Gerard Smith Dies at 34
The band scraps its next five shows after its bassist loses his battle to lung cancer.
TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith died Wednesday after a battle with lung cancer. He was 34.
"We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer. Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011,” read a statement on the band’s Web site. “We will miss him terribly."
The band says, "There will be more information as it becomes available." In the meantime, they have canceled their next five shows.
Smith was diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after the Brooklyn, NY-based band wrapped its latest album, Nine Types of Light. At the time, the band said Smith had health insurance, great medical care and had already seen "dramatic results," although he did not join them on their latest tour.
He had been with the group since 2005.
