TV, Theater Actress Sada Thompson Dies at 83

She starred in the ABC drama "Family" and won an Emmy in 1978.

Sada Thompson, the TV and theater actress who starred in ABC drama Family, died Wednesday of lung disease, the Los Angeles Times reports. She was 83.

Thompson was nominated for four Emmy Awards for her portrayal of mother Kate Lawrence on Family, which was set in Pasadena, Calif. She won an Emmy in 1978.

The actress co-starred with Meredith Baxter and Kristy McNicol during the series run in the late 1970s.

"It saddens me greatly that she's gone. She was a formidable teacher and a wonderful woman. I admired her greatly," Baxter said in a statement to the Times.

She was nominated for five other Emmys: in 1976 for Sandburg's Lincoln and a 1991 guest appearance on Cheers.

Thompson was nominated for several awards for the off-Broadway play The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. She won a Tony for best actress in the 1972 play Twigs.

After appearing on Family, she guest starred on The Love Boat and Law & Order.
