Twentieth TV led into 'Temptation'
EmptyTwentieth Television said Tuesday that it is moving forward with "Temptation," a game show from FremantleMedia North America that is targeted to launch in the fall.
The distributor said it has cleared the half-hour strip on the 10 MyNetworkTV affiliates that are owned and operated by Fox Television Stations: WWOR New York, KCOP Los Angeles, WPWR Chicago, KDFI Dallas, WDCA Washington, KTXH Houston, WFTC Minneapolis, KUTP Phoenix, WRBW Orlando and WUTB Baltimore. The clearances represent 24% of the country.
"Temptation" is based on FMNA's global format "Sale of the Century," which aired in the U.S. on NBC from 1983-89. The strip features three contestants competing against one another to earn cash by answering questions about pop culture and current events.
Throughout the program, contestants are tempted to spend their money on high-end prizes at bargain prices. The winning contestant is the one with the most money.
Prizes featured on "Temptation" will be — for what Twentieth said will be the first time in U.S. television history — available to viewers for discounted purchase via phone or at the program's official Web site.
Twentieth is selling double runs of the show on a cash-plus-barter basis in daytime, early fringe and access time periods.
"'Temptation' is an exciting game show with a proven format nearly unparalleled anywhere," said Paul Buccieri, president of programming of Twentieth. "It will draw in viewers with its fun games and give them the opportunity to further participate by offering the opportunity to purchase luxury prizes at significant discounts."
Added FMNA CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz, "(The show's) interactive, transactional shopping format sets it apart from any other game show on television with a new and more interesting business model for the genre."
"Sale of the Century" also has aired in such countries as the U.K., Hong Kong and Paraguay, where it is the country's first-ever game show strip. The show debuted in Australia in 1970 and returned there in 2005 under the title "Temptation."
