Two New TV Projects Share Titles With Gay Hookup Apps
Fox's 'The Grinder,' starring Rob Lowe, and NBC's 'Manhunt' have nothing in common with gay dating platforms Grindr and Manhunt — except their names.
This story first appeared in the March 27 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
When Fox announced its pilot The Grinder (starring Rob Lowe as a TV lawyer), it likely didn't plan on the comedy being confused with gay "dating" app Grindr. The same goes for NBC's Manhunt, a drama from Whit Brayton and Zack Rice about the search for a fugitive — with the same name as another gay hookup platform. "We'd be happy to license the shit out of our name to [NBC]," laughs Manhunt CEO Adam Segel, adding his idea for the show: "Find the fugitive at the end hiding out on our site.
A lot of celebrities have been caught on our site, so why not a fugitive?" Says Grindr founder and CEO Joel Simkhai of Lowe, "We're psyched that he's Grinding."
