Tykwer, Steinmann back Africa initiative

One Fine Day Films to provide training for filmmakers

BERLIN -- Tom Tykwer and Marie Steinmann's production company One Fine Day Films has launched an initiative, together with the Deutsche Welle Academy, to provide professional training for filmmakers from Africa.

The project, FilmAfrica!, will see One Fine Day and the DW Academy set up training workshops across Africa teaching practical filmmaking skills: from directing, producing and screenwriting to cinematography, and costume and sound design. The first FilmAfrica! workshop will be held this fall in Nairobi, Kenya.

Funding for the project comes from Germany's federal ministry for economic cooperation and development. The Goethe Institute and the NRW Film Board are providing additional support.

Tykwer and Steinmann set up One Fine Day to finance and produce African films with local filmmakers. The company's first project, Hawa Essuman's "Soul Boy," won the audience award at this year's Rotterdam International Film Festival.
