UGC, MK2 sign off on 'Le Pass'

PARIS -- Gallic theater chains UGC and MK2 have joined forces to release a new multiaccess moviegoing card, ending months of disagreements.

A new version of the popular "Le Pass" has been approved by state film body the CNC. The new card will allow holders unlimited access to all 540 MK2 and UGC cinemas in France for €19.80 ($27.36) a month. MK2 is offering to waive the cost of opening an account until Oct. 31, and cinephiles can couple up to purchase a two-person "UGC Illimite 2" pass for a monthly fee of €35 ($48.36).

The new agreement comes after MK2 pulled out of a three-way partnership with fellow exhibitors Gaumont and Pathe in June. MK2's president Marin Karmitz argued that the unlimited passes were no longer profitable.

The existing cards will be valid through March 14, 2009, when the CNC and both theater chains will reassess the profitability of the new system.
