'Ugly Betty' Actor Admits to Murdering Mom, Says He Was 'Doing Work of God'

"I didn't kill her. I killed the demon inside her," says Michael Brea, who mutilated his mother with a sword.

Ugly Betty actor Michael Brea admits to brutally murdering his mother with a sword -- but says he was doing God's work.

"I didn't kill her. I killed the demon inside her," Brea told the New York Daily News from Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

Brea told the paper he was riding the subway home to Brooklyn from the Prince Hall Masonic Temple in Harlem on Monday when he began to hear voices speaking to him about his mother. "I felt like Neo from The Matrix," he said.

When he returned to his apartment, he hugged his mother, a Haitian immigrant named Yannick, and went to his bedroom to get a dagger and a 3-foot ceremonial Freemason sword.

"I asked, 'Do you believe in God?' She said, 'No, Michael no,' and began screaming. I began slashing her like this," said Brea while demonstrating a hacking motion.

A struggle ensued, and blood was splattered over photos, walls, the bed and floor around the apartment as he chased her. After the police arrived, Brea continued slicing.

"I just kept cutting her. No one could stop me. I was doing the work of God," he said.

Despite the grisly murder, his family released a statement Friday standing behind Brea: "All who have ever come in contact with Michael know that he is a compassionate, gentle, intelligent, spiritual and loving man. His brother, father and friends stand by him and will aid with his recovery in every possible way... His family and friends know, without question, that Michael was not well in the moments leading to [his mother's] death."
