U.K. b'casters clear schedules for Jackson

Primetime programs make way for live concert coverage

LONDON -- U.K. broadcasters and news networks are tearing up their primetime schedules to make room for live coverage of Michael Jackson's funeral and memorial concert Tuesday.

BBC2 will carry an hour-and-a-half special "Michael Jackson Memorial" between 6 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. and will simulcast some coverage with BBC News 24, the BBC's round-the-clock channel that will cover the memorial concert live from Los Angeles and BBC HD, its general entertainment high definition channel.

The concert is expected to feature 12-year-old "Britain's Got Talent" finalist Shaheen Jafargholi, of whom Jackson was thought to be a fan.

ITV and Channel 4 are expected to reflect the events surrounding the singer's final farewell on their early and late news bulletins, but will leave evening schedules unchanged.

But the Five channel is running the entire event across its primetime slots, airing "Michael: The World Says Goodbye" from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sky News will run Jackson tribute programming in a special program "Michael Jackson: the Farewell" from 5.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. which will also be simulcast on Sky Arts and on the HD versions of both channels.
