U.K. to Spain for police drama

MADRID -- Spanish broadcaster Antena 3 said Thursday that it has signed to make a Spanish version of the BBC's award-winning series "Life on Mars," moving the police drama from Manchester to Madrid.

The Spanish version will be produced by a Spanish production house in 2008 and air in primetime next year, according to a spokesman for the channel.

Antena 3's version will be set in 1978, just after the death of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, addressing the transformation in Spanish society as the country moved toward democracy.

Antena 3 started airing the original version of "Mars" this month on its DTT channel Antena.neox, which garners a 4.3% slice of the TV market share.
