LONDON -- The U.K. Film Council is launching a movie search engine,, designed to enable consumers to find out when, where and how a film is available legally in the U.K.

The search, launching Wednesday, will look across all formats and platforms spanning cinema, TV, DVD and Blu-ray for sale or rental, download and streaming.

Billed as a Google for films, the U.K. Film Council claims it is the first time anything like this has been delivered over the Internet that indexes all available films in the U.K. and is free to use. contains more than 30,000 unique film records -- about seven years' worth of films -- and is expanding daily as more films become available in the U.K.

It covers 20 genres, including action, foreign, thriller and drama and has an "alert me" function that allows users to be e-mailed when availability changes.
