Ukraine to triple state funding for film

2009 budget to increase to $27 million

MOSCOW -- The Ukrainian government will nearly triple state funding for the film industry, it was announced Monday.

The budget for 2009 stipulates that state funding for the sector will increase from the current 50 million hryvnas ($9.6 million) to 141 million hryvnas ($27 million).

Meanwhile, Dmitry Kolesnikov, vp of the Ukrainian film producers' association, said that, under current legislation, money cannot be allotted to individual producers and can only be used for government-commissioned projects -- a fact that means most of this year's funds won't be used at all.
