Gayle Forman Just One Day - H 2014

Fake Empire heads Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are onboard to produce

Universal Pictures has optioned the best-selling YA novels Just One Day and its follow-up, Just One Year, both written by Gayle Forman, with a plan to combine both into a single-feature love story.

Fake Empire heads Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are onboard to produce through their Universal-based shingle.

Just One Day and Just One Year follows the story of a young couple who meet and share one incredible day (and night) together only to be separated, spending the next year looking for each other and finding themselves along the journey.

One Day, released Aug. 20, 2013, told the story from the young woman's point of view, while One Year, published in September 2014, told the young man's story.

The books have been described as being in the tone of Before Sunrise and 500 Days of Summer

Fake Empire head of motion pictures Lis Rowinski will executive produce alongside Forman. The shingle's creative executive Lynley Bird brought the project in and will oversee.

Senior vp production Kristin Lowe and creative executive Chloe Yellin will oversee for Universal.

Forman may be best known in film circles for her YA novel If I Stay, which was adapted by New Line into a drama starring Chloe Grace Moretz. The novel is currently at No. 1 on the New York Times young adult best-seller list, with its sequel, Where She Went, at No. 3.

Schwartz and Savage are writing and producing Universal's live-action feature Monster High based on Mattel's mega franchise. The duo are also producing MGM's high-profile reimagining of the iconic 1980s movie WarGames. The shingle is currently in production on The Astronaut Wives Club, which ABC picked up for a 10-episode straight-to-series order earlier this year.

Forman was repped by Paradigm on behalf of Michael Bourret of Dystel & Goderich.
