Univision, DirecTV ink retransmission deal

Multiyear deal covers Univision's O&O's

Spanish-language media conglomerate Univision Communications said Tuesday that it has reached a multiyear retransmission pact with DirecTV.

The agreement covers carriage of Univision's owned-and-operated TV stations; affiliated stations owned and operated by Entravision Communications, Equity Media Holdings and Fisher Communications; the network feeds for Univision and TeleFutura; and cable network Galavision.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the company had previously signaled that it would seek $1 per subscriber.

"The partnership with DirecTV speaks to the growing influence of the Hispanic consumer in the nation," Univision CEO Joe Uva said. "Our distributors understand that a partnership with Univision is an investment in sustained growth."

Faced with high debt and a shrinking ad market, Univision recently laid off 300 employees, about 6% of its work force.
