USA Network orders third season of 'Psych'

USA Network sees more "Psych" in its future.

The cable channel has renewed the hourlong drama series from Universal Media Studios for a third season. It has ordered 16 more episodes for a summer 2008 debut.

"We are thrilled to bring 'Psych' back for a third season," said Jeff Wachtel, executive vp original programming at USA. "The series has been a critical and ratings sensation since it premiered last summer and continues to gain new viewers and grow its fan base."

The series, which airs at 10 p.m. Fridays after "Monk," was last year's No. 1 new cable show.

In its second season, which wraps Sept. 14, the show is averaging 4.6 million total viewers, including 2.3 million in adults 25-54 and 2.1 million in adults 18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research. It also has been the No. 1 cable program in its time slot this summer.

"Psych" stars James Roday as Shawn Spencer, whose uncanny powers of observation have led to a job solving cases for the police department. Dule Hill, Corbin Bernsen, Maggie Lawson, Timothy Omundson and Kirsten Nelson round out the cast.

The show is executive produced by Steve Franks in association with Tagline Pictures' Kelly Kulchak and Chris Henze and Universal Media Studios.
