UTV signs $20.5 mil in syndication deals
India and U.K. broadcasters take 2008 and 2009 slateHONG KONG -- India's UTV Motion pictures has struck a string of non-exclusive deals syndicating its 2008 and 2009 movie slates to TV broadcasters in India, the U.K. and abroad, with a total value of INR950 million ($20.5 million).
Titles comprising the package include last year's "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!" and "Dev D," 2009 pictures "Kaminey" and "Wake Up Sid" and now on release "Kurbaan," starring real-life couple Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan.
In UTV's domestic market, the package was licensed to the fast-rising Colors general entertainment channel for first runs, while NDTV struck a deal for second runs. In the U.K. the package was acquired by terrestrial broadcaster Channel 4. For other territories it was licensed by B4U, one of the major global channels serving the Indian diaspora that was founded a decade ago by a trip of London-based Indian businessmen.
"These television syndication deals are non-exclusive in nature and hence allow us to exploit the same content across multiple additional broadcasters in India and worldwide," said Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO of UTV Motion Pictures said in a statement. "The faith that Colors, NDTV Imagine, B4U and Channel 4 have reposed in our entire slate of productions is heartening and encouraging."
