Van Damme pic gets Peace Arch pickup

Film will make North American debut at Toronto fest

MONTREAL -- Canadian producer Peace Arch Entertainment has picked up North American rights to the Jean-Claude Van Damme biopic "JCVD" ahead of its North American bow at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Mabrouk El Mechri-directed mockumentary from Gaumont, which debuted in Cannes, sees Van Damme play himself in the midst of a real-life hostage situation in his native Belgium.

Toronto-based Peace Arch intends a fall release for the movie, which was acquired as part of a joint venture recently struck between the Canadian company and Britain's ContentFilm.

"JCVD" screens in Toronto on Sept. 4.
