VENICE -- Natalie Portman's directorial debut, a 22-minute short film about a girl who finds herself intruding on her grandmother's romantic date, received an enthusiastic response on the Venice Lido on Monday.

"Eve" was the opening film of the Corto Cortissimo short-film sidebar, which packed the house in the Lido's 500-seat Sala Perla. Most stayed on for the other six films that made up the afternoon's short-film slate.

Portman's presence also added some star power to what has so far been a low wattage festival by Venice standards.
