Venice Film Festival Fashion Preview: Miu Miu, Gucci Plan Events
The Italian fest is a month away and major fashion brands are already planning events that will take place there.
Cannes may be the world's most fashionable film festival, but Venice is probably second. The looks on actresses for both night and day at Venice affect trends that carry on all year long. And this goes back to the point that we've been making at The Hollywood Reporter: film festivals are turning into fashion festivals, too.
Miu Miu and Gucci recently announced major events at Venice, and now that we have a list of films that will debut, we also know which actresses to expect on the red carpet -- which almost tells you which kinds of looks we'll see from fall and resort 2013 collections.
Miu Miu will debut their fourth short fashion film at Venice's Giornate degli Autori, one of the addendum programs to the fest screenings. Zoe Cassavetes and Lucrecia Martel are just two of the directors who've worked with Prada and MiuMiu on their short films.
Miuccia Prada is one of the pioneer designers to push fashion more toward little films, and for a fashion film to be shown as a short at a fest this big is very impressive.
Gucci has two major things going on, as the Italian brand alligns itself more and more with film world. Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of Drive, has made a short film for Gucci starring Blake Lively, and if that weren't glam enough, Gucci will bestow the second annual Gucci Award for Women in Cinema to a number of high level females in the film business.
Among the actresses expected to grace the red carpet at this year's fest is Kate Hudson, who will likely be crossing the Lido as she stars in Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist. She always makes for good eye candy.
Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers features Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez as very bad girls, so look for them both to go va-va-voom for a night.
Rachel McAdams will do double promo, for Brian DePalma's Passion (in which she stars with Noomi Rapace), and she's in the new Terrence Malick film To The Wonder, which also has Amanda Peet, Rachel Weisz, Javier Bardem and Ben Affleck. McAdam's stylist team will have to be pulling double duty, since she'll have to walk and do press conferences for two completely different films.
Anna Kendrick and Brit Marling are in the new Robert Redford film The Company You Keep, and Winona Ryder will make a red carpet comeback (she was always dressed impeccably) for the movie The Iceman.
And those are only the American stars!
