Latin America’s biggest film market brings a Cannes Film Week, adds a European Screenings Day and strengthens its genre sidebar

The 6th edition of Latin America’s biggest film market, Ventana Sur, kicked off on Monday in Buenos Aires, with a newly added European Screenings Day and an expanded Cannes Film Week. 

Organized by Cannes’ Marche du Film and Argentina’s film institute INCAA, and directed by Bernardo Bergeret together with France’s Jerome Paillard, Ventana Sur has aimed to match LatAm film projects with European and U.S. co-producers, display the region’s latest titles to distributors and sales agents, promote the remake-rights business and, most recently, boost booming genre-cinema scene through its Blood Window sidebar.

One of Ventana Sur highlight sections, Primer Corte will showcase a selection of films in postproduction hand-picked by Cannes Cinefondation’s Georges Goldenstern. The lineup includes Daniel Rosenfeld’s To the Center of the Earth (Argentina), Luis Zorraquin’s Guarani (Paraguay), Federico Borgia and Guillermo Madeiro’s Clever (Uruguay), Esteban Ramirez’s Imprisoned (Costa Rica), Jaime Barrios Martínez’s Paisaje indeleble (Colombia) and Marina Person’s California (Brazil). All six titles will compete for postproduction and distribution prizes.

Other high-profile titles to be screened for agents and buyers include Papers in the Wind, the latest from Argentina’s Juan Taratuto (The Reconstruction) and writer Eduardo Sacheri (Foreign Oscar winner The Secret In Their Eyes), Marco Berger’s sci-fi fantasy Butterfly, Jose Luis Rugeles' Alias Maria, Salvador del Solar's Magallanes and Chilean thriller The Stranger, directed by Guillermo Amoedo, who co-wrote Eli Roth’s mondo film The Green Inferno.

A new addition to the program, the European Screenings Day will consist in a last day of strictly European films, a first time for the Latin America-focused market.

This year, the formerly branded “European Film Week,” which usually featured public screenings of Cannes' greatest hits, has expanded its range and morphed into a seven-day showcase of the festival's hottest titles, including Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Golden Palm winner Winter Sleep, and the two Jury Prize winners: Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language and Xavier Dolan’s Mommy.

Cannes’ head, Thierry Fremaux, is expected to address LatAm film professionals at a market conference on Tuesday. Also attending are The Artist’s director, Michel Hazanavicius, and his wife, actress Berenice Bejo, who also starred in Hazanavicius' latest film, The Search.

Ventana Sur runs Dec. 1-5 in Buenos Aires.
