Vettel Victory Brings Ratings up to Winning Levels

Young German's F1 Win a Boon for Broadcaster RTL

COLOGNE, Germany – Germany has a new racing hero and network RTL a new ratings magnet. 12.3 million Germans, a 56.8% market share, tuned in to RTL Sunday to watch 23-year-old Sebastian Vettel become the youngest-ever world champion of the Formula One racing circuit.

Vettel won his title in dramatic fashion, taking first place in the season’s last race in Abu Dhabi to beat Spanish driver and two-time world champ Fernando Alonso, who had led the standings going in.

Vettel’s season-long pursuit of Alonso has drawn German fans back to Formula One. RTL has averaged 6.3 million viewers per race, about a million more than last season. Now everyone at RTL is hoping young Vettel can keep it up. But the signs aren’t good. In the past five years, five different drivers have take the Formula One world title.
