VH1 snaps up rights to 'Anvil!' doc

Film set for April 10 release in at least 18 cities

VH1 has acquired theatrical distribution rights to the documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," a real-life heavy metal tale that has drawn comparisons to the mockumentary classic "This Is Spinal Tap."

"Anvil!" follows the band from playing on a 1980s stadium tour with Scorpions and Bon Jovi to playing in bars in recent years. Although the film has comic moments, it's a poignant and ultimately uplifting story that has picked up a slew of festival awards, including audience awards in Los Angeles and Sydney.

The network plans an April 10 release in at least 18 cities for the film, accompanied by heavy on-air support. VH1 will run the movie's full-length trailer like a music video and feature on-air appearances by the band.

"This film is so much more than a documentary about the roots of metal -- it's a story about the power of perseverance and friendship and the passion that drives them," VH1 president Tom Calderone said. " 'Anvil!' has a huge heart and will resonate with all of our viewers. This is the type of project that drew me into the VH1 fold and makes me especially proud to work here."

VH1 Classic will present a series of seven events in U.S. cities timed to the release of "Anvil!" Each will include a screening of the film and performance by the band.
