Viacom names Mei Yan new China MTV head

Former News Corp. exec won Emmys, Cable ACEs

BEIJING -- Viacom has named Mei Yan its new China chief representative and managing director of MTV Networks China, a 24-hour channel reaching 14 million households in the southern province of Guangdong.

Mei fills a vacancy in Beijing created last July when Li Yifei left Viacom after nearly 10 years.

She comes to Viacom from News Corp., where she most recently served as chief strategy officer. Previously she was chief representative and chief corporate alliance officer within News Corp. and its Star China operations.

In her new job, Mei will oversee MTV China and all Viacom's Nickelodeon-branded programming, including the top-rated "SpongeBob Squarepants" cartoon series, which airs in 15 Chinese cities reaching 20 million viewers.

She also will oversee Viacom's business development and government relations.

"Mei Yan's experience, paired with her reputation as an astute and well-respected media executive, makes her the perfect choice to lead our businesses in China," said Mei's new boss, Indra Suharjono, executive vp and managing director of MTV's operations across Greater China.

Before News Corp., Mei was vp network marketing and distribution for Turner International Asia Pacific, a post she took after 10 years in a variety of management and journalistic positions at CNN's headquarters in Atlanta.
