The studio tapped the first female 'Star Wars' director to shoot the two-hander that stars Sterling K. Brown and Kerry Washington.

Lionsgate has tapped Victoria Mahoney —  the history-making Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker second unit director — to direct the Hollywood studio's action two-hander Shadow Force, with Sterling K. Brown and Kerry Washington to star.

Mahoney appeared in minor roles in movies and TV shows before making her directorial debut with Yelling at the Sky, a semi-autobiographical indie feature that starred Zoe Kravitz and Jason Clarke and was released in 2012.

She directed episodes of several series such as Power and American Crime, but made headlines when she was hired as Rise of Skywalker’s second unit director, becoming the first woman and first person of color to tackle such a position for the Star Wars franchise.

Now Mahoney will direct Shadow Force, the action pic written by Leon Chills and Joe Carnahan about an estranged husband and wife with a bounty on their heads who must go on the run with their son to avoid their former employer — a unit of shadow ops that has been sent to kill them.

"Victoria is one of the most impressive and in-demand directors working today. Like with all of her work, she will bring iconic action, warmth, style, and gravitas to Shadow Force," Erin Westerman, president of production for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement.

Shadow Force will be produced by Stephen “Dr.” Love, Washington, Brown and Pilar Savone.
The film is executive produced by Danielle Reardon, Jennifer Wiley-Stockton and Katherine Atkinson.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Victoria Mahoney. Her vision is inspiring. Her enthusiasm is infectious. Her artistry and insight have already deepened this electrifying project," Kerry Washington and Sterling K. Brown added in their own statement.

Shadow Force is being overseen at Lionsgate by Aaron Janus and Aaron Edmonds. Quinn Curry is overseeing the production for Made With Love Media. Lionsgate’s Robert Melnik negotiated the deal with Mahoney on behalf of the studio.

Mahoney is repped by CAA and Del Shaw.
