'Bang Bang!' stars Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif.

"Bang Bang!" features top actor Hrithik Roshan and actress Katrina Kaif "reinventing" the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz pairing of the Hollywood original.

Fox Star Studios India revealed the first teaser of their long-awaited Bollywood 'reinvention' of Knight and Day. Starring Bollywood A-listers Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, Bang Bang! will be released on Oct. 2, an important day in India as it is also the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. The film's teaser features the cheeky tagline: “On the most peaceful day of the year, bullets will fly.”

In an interview with THR explaining the project last September, Fox International Productions president Sanford Panitch said that Bang Bang! “happens to be based on a Hollywood film that the director (Siddharth Anand) and Roshan thought would lend itself well to the Indian market. But it's almost a reinvention — it's really a Bollywood film. Most of the audience probably never saw the original, while for some pockets of the audience there may be a curiosity to compare it with Knight and Day.”

The action-packed sequences from the Bang Bang! teaser have already seen the film being likened to the homegrown Dhoom blockbuster franchise (from veteran Bollywood studio Yash Raj Films), the third installment of which last December set box-office records. Both Roshan and Kaif have separately starred in the Dhoom franchise (in the second and third installments, respectively).

“I spent three years writing the film. The kind of action you'll get to see here has hardly been attempted in the industry before,” Anand said about Bang Bang! in a statement released at the same time as the trailer. “It's a blend of action and romance in the truest sense. I am really happy with the way Hrithik and Katrina have infused life into their characters.”

While the Indian film industry has long been accused of ripping off foreign films for storylines — and even poster designs — the trend of official remakes is slowly taking root. FSS recently released City Lights, the Hindi remake of Metro Manila, the British entry for Best Foreign Language Oscar in 2013.

Back in 2010, leading producer Karan Johar's We Are Family — a Bollywood remake of the Julia Roberts-Suran Sarandon-starrer Stepmom — was considered the first major official Hindi remake of an international film.
