Viewers eye CBS as Fox draws demo

Last week's primetime ratings settled into the most recent familiar pattern, with CBS winning in viewership and Fox in adults 18-49.

Another "Desperate Housewives" original on ABC made it more of a race Sunday, but the network's "Grey's Anatomy" clip show didn't give CBS much of a fight in the battle for Thursday. Fox won Tuesday and Wednesday with "American Idol" and "House," while CBS tied ABC in the demo Monday. Data for the week ending April 15 was released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.

The week started off with a victory for ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" (18.8 million, 4.8 rating/13 share in adults 18-49) and an on-par performance for "The Bachelor: An Officer and a Gentleman" (9.1 million, 3.4/9). But CBS — boosted by strong performances by "Two and a Half Men" (13.5 million, 4.5/11) and "The King of Queens" (13.4 million, 4.6/11), along with "CSI: Miami" (16.1 million, 4.7/13) — tied ABC for the night in the demo. ABC still won the viewership title by 2 million.

Fox held the Tuesday dance card, with "Idol" (26.8 million, 10.3/29) and "House" (21.6 million, 8.8/22) overtaking everything else, though the "Dancing" results show (17.3 million, 4.2/11) performed admirably at 9 p.m. against "House."

It was all Fox again Wednesday, with a 9 p.m. "Idol" (28.6 million, 11.1/27) drubbing the competition. Two episodes of " 'Til Death" (7 million, 2.8/8 and 8.6 million, 3.4/9) didn't perform as well before "Idol" as it did in previous weeks after it. "Lost" (12.1 million, 5.2/14) won the time period in the demo against "CSI: NY" (12.6 million, 3.4/9).

The CBS lineup overshadowed everything on Thursday, with "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (22.2 million, 6.7/17) prevailing over the "Grey's" clip show (12.6 million, 5.0/13). "Shark" (14.5 million, 3.9/11) won the 10 p.m. hour against the return of "ER" (6.8 million, 3.7/10) and ABC's premiere of "Notes From the Underbelly" (8.3 million, 3.6/10). "Survivor: Fiji" (10.2 million, 4.5/13) won at 8 p.m.

Friday was won by CBS, even though it had all repeats. Saturday was split between CBS in viewers and Fox in the demo, highlighted by a new "America's Most Wanted" on the latter.

Sunday went to CBS in viewership and ABC in adults 18-49, with a new "Desperate Housewives" (16.3 million, 6.4/15) seeing week-over-week improvement and beating "Cold Case" (12.2 million, 3.0/7). "Without a Trace" (14.3 million, 3.5/9) found itself the winner in viewers but lost to "Brothers & Sisters" (11.3 million, 4.5/11) in the demo. A repeat of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (10.3 million, 3.8/10) beat "The Amazing Race" (9 million, 3.0/8).

For the week, CBS averaged 11.3 million viewers and a 3.1/9, followed by Fox (10.3 million, 4.0/11), ABC (9.3 million, 3.1/9), NBC (6.8 million, 2.2/6) and the CW (2.7 million, 1.1/3).
