Shoe Designer Vince Camuto Dies at 78

The famed fashion fixture — who founded Nine West and the Camuto Group, and launched the Jessica Simpson brand — died on Wednesday.

Shoe designer Vince Camuto, the founder of Nine West and the Camuto Group, has died at 78. The cause of death was cancer.

The entrepreneur died at his home in Greenwich, Conn., on Wednesday, and was surrounded by his wife and five children, reports WWD.

Camuto founded the Nine West footwear brand with his former business partner, Jerome Fisher, in 1978, and sold the company to Jones Group Inc. for about  $900 million in 1999. The famed designer then went on to launch the Camuto Group in 2001, creating labels such as Vince Camuto, VC Signature Vince Camuto and Louise et Cie. Camuto also has licenses and partnerships with brands Tory Burch, BCBG Max Azria and Banana Republic, among other retailers, and launched the Jessica Simpson brand, which brought in more than $1 billion in sales in 2014, according to WWD.

Simpson took to Instagram to mourn the designer, writing: "Thank you, Vince, for the humble power that has taken me everywhere. You are my mentor, my family, the creator of all my dreams. I will forever walk in your made them. #brokenheart"

On Thursday, a photo was shared in loving memory of the designer under the Vince Camuto Instagram account.
