Virgin 17 brings 'Aguila Roja' to France

Spanish period drama to air on prime time TV

MADRID -- France's terrestrial digital channel Virgin 17 of the Lagardere Active Group has signed a deal to bring Spain's top homegrown series of the moment "Aguila Roja" to French audiences in prime time, Imagina International Sales announced Thursday.

Period drama "Aguila," produced by Spanish production powerhouse Globomedia for pubcaster Television Espanola, has sat atop the Spanish weekly ratings thanks to a mixture of adventure, romance and humor.

The first season, comprising 17 50-minute episodes, averaged more than 25% of the Spanish viewing audience when it aired last year. The second season saw that share grow to just over 30% or some 5.6 million viewers.

The story focuses on the double life of a mild-mannered father who decides to avenge the death of his wife and becomes a 17th-century secret hero who fights for justice.
