Vivendi picks up North American rights to 'Beyblade'

Gets first 51 episodes of spinoff series for DVD, VOD

TORONTO -- Vivendi Entertainment has picked up the North American DVD and VOD rights to Canadian cartoon factory Nelvana's "Beyblade: Metal Fusion" series.
The deal hands Vivendi the first 51 episodes to the spinoff series from the early 2000s Japanese anime sensation.
Vivendi will release the co-production between Nelvana and Japanese partner D-rights in seven DVD releases, starting with a Nov. 9 release of the first volume in the English, French and Spanish languages.
"Beyblade: Metal Fusion" airs on YTV in Canada and Cartoon Network in the U.S., and has an upcoming U.K. launch as part of a worldwide rollout.
The boys action anime series bowed last year in Japan on TV Tokyo as "Metal Fight Beyblade," and helped market a Beyblade toy line from master toy partner Hasbro, D-rights and Nelvana Enterprises set to be introduced into the North American market.
The second-generation anime series features fresh characters competing with spinning Beyblade tops for dominance over an evil organization, the Dark Nebula.
