Vodafone eyeing Kabel Deutschland

Value of takeover deal more than $3 bil

COLOGNE, Germany -- British mobile phone giant Vodafone is reportedly considering a takeover bid for Kabel Deutschland (KDG) Germany’s largest cable TV group.

Vodafone is already a major player in the German cell phone market -- with around 36 million customers, it is the number two behind Germany’s T Mobile.

Kabel Deutschland would give the British group a major boost in the fast-growing German broadband market. KDG has around 11 million customers in Germany. Vodafone’s German subsidiary Arcor controls around 14% of the broadband market but T Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom is far ahead with about 45% of German Internet hook-ups.

Media reports have valued a deal at more than $3 billion. Vodafone and KDG in German declined comment Friday.
