TORONTO - Canadian distributor VVS Films has grabbed the Canadian rights to Mark Steven Johnson’s Killing Season, starring Robert De Niro and John Travolta, from Nu Image/Millennium.

Production on the action film from Millenium Films and Corsan Pictures is set to start in January 2012 in the Appalachian Mountains.

In other AFM 2011 deals, the Montreal-based indie distributor acquired from Voltage Scott Walker’s feature film debut The Frozen Ground, starring Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and Vanessa Hudgens.

VVS will release the serial killer thriller in December 2012, alongside the stateside release.

And the Canadian distributor also picked up another thriller, Vehicle 19, from UTA.

South African filmmaker Mukunda Michael Dewil is directing Vehicle 19, which stars Fast Five star Paul Walker.

VVS Films’ 2012 release slate already has James McTeigue’s The Raven, starring John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans; Gabriele Muccino’s Playing The Field, with Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, and Catherine Zeta-Jones; and John Luessenhop’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.
