'Warlords,' 'Cape' astride Golden Horse

Chan film garners 12 noms; upstart takes 9

TAIPEI -- Peter Chan's "The Warlords" garnered 12 nominations and Wei-Te Sheng's local boxoffice champ "Cape No. 7" followed with nine as noms for the 45th annual Golden Horse Awards were revealed Thursday.

The 12 nods for "Warlords" includes noms for best feature, director and leading actor, for Jet Li. "Cape No. 7," this year's top-grossing film in Taiwan, is up for outstanding Taiwanese film of the year.

Other films in contention include "The Assembly" with six mentions and "Ocean Flame" with five. John Woo's historical epic "Red Cliff," "Orz Boys" and "Trivial Matters," each received four noms.

The Dec. 6 awards ceremony provides a coda for the Golden Horse Film Festival, which this year is attempting to broaden its domestic audience by splitting the nearly monthlong event between two cities.

This year's festival begins Nov. 6 in Taipei with a screening of Mong-Hong Chung's "Parking," then shifts southward to Taichung in mid-November, where it will wrap up its last two weeks.

Organizers say the split-city approach is an effort to serve viewers in central and southern Taiwan who might otherwise not travel to Taipei.

"We've chosen a lot of crowd pleasers this year, not just art house flicks," said program director Patrick Jia, who previously spent 12 years working with 20th Century Fox. Jia hopes rebranding the traditional festival will help attract audiences from around the world.

More than 130 features will crisscross 12 categories this year. Gala screenings include Petri Kotwica's "Black Ice," director Simon Staho's "Heaven's Heart" and "Tokyo!" the triptych from directors Bong Joon Ho, Leos Carax and Michel Gondry.

New categories include "Made in the U.S.A.," which will showcase independent American productions, and "Education Matters," about just that.

The festival comes to a close Dec. 4 with two films: French director Cedric Klapisch's "Paris" and Taiwanese director Li-chou Yang's documentary "Beyond the Arctic."
