Annapurna and MoviePass also joined the hottest parties at the desert festival.

Though Coachella is Southern California's most popular music festival, the film industry got in on the Weekend 1 action by teasing forthcoming films. Annapurna, Warner Bros., MoviePass, Amazon Studios and Paramount Pictures were some of the Hollywood companies and studios to host activations and A-list parties in the desert from Thursday to Saturday.

Paramount got crafty at designer Rachel Zoe’s annual Zoeasis party at the Parker Palm Springs hotel on Friday afternoon. The studio hosted an Elton John activation with an arts-and-crafts table ahead of Dexter Fletcher's Rocketman premiere on May 31. Guests — including Victoria Justice, Quincy Brown, Kiernan Shipka and Alisha Boe, along with Hollywood stylist duo Wayman and Micah — could customize a pair of statement eyewear or sunglasses in various styles, from heart-shaped or chunky block frames to dark mirrored hexagonal shapes, with rhinestones, glitter, studs, pearls and lettered beads. From there, attendees could be snapped at a piano with a blue concert backdrop while wearing their Elton-esque sunnies and receive a keepsake photo. "This is like abstract art," joked Boe, an actress on 13 Reasons Why, while she admired a pair of red sunglasses.

Zoe told The Hollywood Reporter she was excited to see Rocketman because she draws inspiration from his style. “I relate to that style in such a big way,” she said. “I’ve been a fan, such a die-hard fan of his music. I know him and his children, and I love [John's husband] David Furnish. They’re such incredible people. And he’s so brilliant, he’s so over-the-top, and so talented. I could just listen to his music, like, forever. … I feel like we’re kind of style twins sometimes. I put these on and I was in the Elton spirit,” she added while pointing to her round sunglasses.

Zoe’s 8-year-old son, Skyler, attracted all the photographers when he decorated a pair of oversized red, white and blue sunglasses with pearls and spikes, and then donned them for the cameras at the Rocketman DIY embellishing station.

Warner Bros. and MoviePass

The studio took over Neon Carnival for the party's 10-year anniversary this year by decorating the grounds with dancing Pikachu mascots and a Pokemon-themed Ferris Wheel ride in anticipation of the film Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, due out May 10.

Pikachu star Kathryn Newton (Blockers) sported a tie-dye hoodie, tie-dye bucket hat and Pikachu backpack while enjoying the carnival rides at the Saturday afterparty. Also celebrating at the Levi's bash: Leonardo DiCaprio, Winston Duke, H.E.R., Janelle Monae, Paris Hilton, 2 Chainz, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Darren Criss, Ed Westwick, Marshmello, Dylan McDermott, Frankie Delgado, Meek Mill, Alessandra Ambrosio, Lukas Haas and Wiz Khalifa.

A rep for Warner Bros. tells THR: "With the right title, Coachella can be a perfect fit for our films — a movie like Pokemon: Detective Pikachu strikes just the right balance for the Coachella audience: irreverent, cool, fun, nostalgic and a bit ‘out there.'"

The statement continues: "Many of those attending Coachella grew up with Pokemon and, based on the social response from trailers and other content, the film brings him back in a way that millennial audiences are embracing. The attendees of Neon Carnival (all social influencers) are a great group to have as advocates for the film, so showing up where they are and aligning with what the care about helps get them on board."

Despite a rocky financial year and changes to its business model, subscription-based movie ticket distributor MoviePass also sponsored Neon Carnival. (In March, the Hollywood disruptor brought back its $9.95 per month plan that allows customers to see a movie a day with restrictions, after previously cutting back to save money.)

Amazon Studios

The filmmaking collective behind Atlanta, Royalty premiered its secret project Guava Island starring Donald Glover and Rihanna on Thursday at the Coachella camping grounds. Amazon Studios released the film on Saturday for streaming. Guests were treated to fresh coconuts, plantains, tamales and fruit cups before Glover screened the part-animated pic in a specially constructed cylindrical theater.

Guava Island (written by Glover's brother Stephen Glover and directed by Hiro Murai) depicted Glover performing his hits like “This Is America” and “Summertime Magic” as the character Deni, who uses music to uplift his community, which lives under communist rule. Glover and his team, including Amazon head Jennifer Salke, posed for photos after debuting the 54-minute film.

Annapurna Pictures

Annapurna sponsored Nylon’s fourth annual Midnight Garden Party to tout Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut Booksmart, due out May 24. Although stars Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein were in Boston over the weekend, musicians and other stars including Boe, Ross Butler, Erika Jayne, Johnny Wujek, Markus Molinari, Pookie, Ashlee Simpson and Evan Ross were in attendance at the Friday night party at an estate in Indio, California, where Jojo performed a set.

Electronic Arts

Moschino plugged into Electronic Arts’ video game The Sims for creative director Jeremy Scott’s latest eight-item capsule collection, which launched at his Coachella 2019 party on Saturday.

Shipka, Duke, Stella Maxwell, Rowan Blanchard, Tommy Dorfman, Lizzo, Frances Bean Cobain, Hari Nef, Bria Vinaite, Erika Jayne, Aquaria and Quincy helped Scott fete his "Sims" line with digitally inspired pixelated pieces such as a Plumbob bathing suit, a Freezer Bunny cellphone cover and a Uni-Lama tee.

“I love the idea of being able to imagine, design and bring to life a world of individual personas with The Sims universe,” Scott said in a statement. “That concept emulates what I get to do for each collection at Moschino as I create a fantasy universe of spectacular storylines and characters.”

At the party, Diplo, A-Trak, Mazurbate and Alex Chapman deejayed while guests enjoyed a roller skating rink, giant fun slide and light-up dance floor that fit the Sims theme along with Whispering Angel and Ciroc cocktails and comfort food at the Sonic food truck.
