Warner India to release 'Ramayana'

Animated film based on epic Indian story

NEW DELHI -- Warner Bros. India will distribute animated feature “Ramayana – The Epic” on October 15, produced by Maya Digital Media.

Based on the Indian epic story of Lord Rama, the film is the directorial debut of Chetan Desai and features the voice-over talents of Bollywood stars Manoj Bajpayee, Juhi Chawla and Ashutosh Rana.

The production budget and other financial terms of the distribution pickup deal were not given but the film will be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telegu.

“Chetan Desai's version of this epic has taken animation films in India to the next level and one has to see it to believe it. Warner Bros. Pictures is delighted to be associated with this project," said Warner Bros Pictures India deputy managing director Denzil Dias.

“We want to take the most popular Indian story to a global audience. Warner Bros., with its reach and expertise, provides the ideal platform to launch this new avatar of Ramayana, where the past meets the future and mythology meets technology. It’s the story of the original Indian superhero,” added Maya Digital Media chairman and managing director Ketan Mehta.

“Ramayana” will be the second attempt by a Hollywood studio here with an Indian animated feature following Walt Disney India's 2008 release “Roadside Romeo," a co-production with veteran Bollywood banner Yash Raj Films. Despite the voice-over talents of top Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan and actress Kareena Kapoor, “Romeo” performed below expectations.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. India's upcoming slate of domestic titles include “Dus Tola," a romantic drama inspired by traditional Indian folk tales, which will release October 22.
