Warners, Sony reach virtual print fee pact

WB to provide backing to exhibitors deploying 4K projectors

Warner Bros. has agreed to provide financial backing for domestic exhibitors deploying Sony's 4K digital projectors.

The "virtual print fee agreement" -- through which Warners will pay the equivalent of film print costs for years after digital distribution is in place -- marks the sixth such pact with Sony's digital cinema group. Sony Electronics previously secured agreements with Disney, Fox, Paramount, Universal and Sony Pictures.

"Our relationship with Sony will help theater owners upgrade their equipment economically and efficiently, encourage the conversion to digital projection and increase the availability of high-quality 2D and 3D cinema to our audiences," Warners domestic distribution president Dan Fellman said Wednesday.
