'Waste Land' nabs Panorama Award

Documentaries take runner-up prizes

BERLIN -- "Waste Land," a British/Brazilian documentary about the collaboration between Brazilian artist Vik Muniz and the garbage pickers of Rio de Janeiro, has won the Panorama Audience Award at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival.

The doc, directed by Lucy Walker, Joao Jardim and Karen Harley, follows Muniz and a group of landfill scavengers who together transforms garbage into art that is taken to auction houses and museums around the world. E1 Entertainment is handling world sales on "Waste Land."

The Panorama's two runner-up awards also went to documentaries: "Budrus" from American filmmaker Julia Bacha, which looks at a Palestinian village which was split in two by the Israeli security wall, took second place and third went to film biopic "Daniel Schmid – Le chat qui pense," by Swiss filmmakers Pascal Hofmann and Benny Jaberg.
