Peter Capaldi Video Message Still - H 2014

"You should know that we're on your side," Capaldi said in a video to a 9-year-old with autism

When the Time Lord isn't busy preventing the destruction of the universe, he's also doing what he can to lift spirits.

Peter Capaldi, who stars as the eponymous character on Doctor Who, recorded a video for Thomas Goodall, a 9-year-old autistic boy who was deeply affected by the loss of his grandmother. She died in early October.

Capaldi heard about the boy's tough times and recorded a comforting message Monday that he delivered in character.

"You see, when Clara and I are traveling around in time and space, sometimes bad things happen to us," Capaldi said in the video to Goodall, a devoted Doctor Who fan whose family home is decorated in decor related to the show.

"And you know what, Thomas?" Capaldi continued. "Sometimes sad things happen to us, too, so it's nice to know that there's somebody like you out there who is on our side. And you should know that we're on your side, too."

Thomas' father, Ross Goodall, told CNN that watching the video was the first time Thomas had smiled since his grandmother's death.
