'Wave' director picks vampire film

German director Denis Gansel to shoot 'We are the night'

BERLIN -- German director Denis Gansel is going from Nazis to vampires with his new project. The director of boxoffice hit "The Wave," a high school-set drama about the seductive lure of fascism, is on board to shoot vampire movie "Wir sind die Nacht" (We are the night).

The project picked up €1 million ($1.4 million) in subsidies from state body Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, although half of that came from paid-back subsidies on "The Wave." Christian Becker's production house Rat Pack, which also handled "The Wave," will produce "Wir sind die Nacht."

The Medienboard also coughed up for Rat Pack parent company Constantin Film, shelling out €650,000 ($921,000) in production financing for Constantin's rap-biopic "Zeiten andern sich" (Times Change). The film, an "8 Mile"-style rags-to-rap-riches tale, is based on the life of German hip-hop star Bushido.
