Weather Channel Names David Kenny Chairman, CEO

Most recently president of tech firm Akamai, the Yahoo board member will "spearhead the further development of a comprehensive, integrated strategy" to accelerate growth of the company, which is owned by a consortium that includes NBCUniversal.

NEW YORK - The Weather Channel Companies said Tuesday that David Kenny has been picked as the new chairman and CEO of the weather media powerhouse.

Most recently president of tech firm Akamai, he will "spearhead the further development of a comprehensive, integrated strategy to accelerate its growth in the United States and internationally," the company said.

Kenny succeeds Mike Kelly who became president and CEO in 2009. Kelly will now serve as a special adviser to the CEO and the board.

Kenny previously founded VivaKi, the worldwide media and digital arm of ad giant Publicis Groupe, and served as chairman and CEO at brand agency Digitas. He also currently serves as member of the board of Yahoo.

“I was attracted to The Weather Channel because weather is fascinating,” said Kenny.  “Accurate, timely forecasting is an everyday necessity for people and businesses everywhere.  The Weather Channel has ubiquitous reach across our TV, digital and mobile platforms, and that’s what makes us so unique.”

The consortium that owns The Weather Channel Companies includes NBCUniversal and private equity firms Bain Capital and The Blackstone Group.

“David brings a strong leadership background having served as chief executive at global companies across different aspects of the media industry," the owners said in a statement. "This experience gives him a deep understanding of the TV and digital business, and he has the leadership experience and vision to drive global initiatives across all platforms.”
