Web search on move to $5 bil biz

The mobile search advertising market will surge from $813 million in 2008 to $5 billion by 2013, according to research published Wednesday.

Search will become as important in the mobile space as on the desktop, ABI Research said. Consumers will have escalating options to conduct searches by SMS and via branded providers, which will help advertising growth.

Total SMS searches will grow from 13 billion in 2008 to more than 76 billion by 2013, ABI forecasts.

The mobile browser market is expanding fast, with sophisticated Web-browsing software to be installed on 1.5 billion handsets by 2013, the firm predicts.

"There is a lot of development momentum for Web content on mobile phones," ABI research director Michael Wolf said. "The move toward Web-based applications means browser and Web services engines will become increasingly important."
