Weinstein Co. Sets Release Date for Jake Gyllenhaal's 'Southpaw'

The boxing drama from director Antoine Fuqua will debut on July 31, 2015.

Weinstein Co. has set a July 31, 2015 release for Southpaw.

The boxing drama, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), is getting a prime summer date. Southpaw centers on a welterweight champion (Gyllenhaal) who fights his way to the top to find fame and success, but his home life deteriorates around him.

The film is based on a script by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter and Richard Wenk, and also stars Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent" Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz.

Southpaw is produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Alan Riche and Peter Riche.
